DETROIT — A new nationwide program is providing free firearm detection software to every K-12 school across the United States, using artificial intelligence technology to help prevent school shootings.
Bailey’s Promise, launched by Robotic Assistance Devices, Inc. (RAD), offers schools the ability to transform their existing security cameras into real-time threat detection systems. The software analyzes video feeds continuously, identifying visible firearms and immediately alerting staff and emergency responders when a weapon is detected.
How the Technology Works
The program utilizes the same AI technology found in RAD’s commercial security systems. Schools can integrate the software with their current camera infrastructure without purchasing additional hardware or signing long-term contracts. The system provides:
- Real-time firearm detection through existing security cameras
- Instant alerts to on-site personnel and first responders
- Automatic activation of emergency protocols
- High accuracy in weapon identification
“In too many tragedies, warning signs were present but went unnoticed,” developer Steve Reinharz said. “Bailey’s Promise ensures those critical moments are never missed again.”
Accessibility and Implementation
The initiative removes typical barriers to advanced security technology:
- No cost to any public, private, or charter K-12 school
- No licensing fees or hidden requirements
- Free implementation support and training included
- Simple requirements: compatible camera system and internet access
Schools receive comprehensive onboarding assistance to ensure quick and confident deployment of the technology.
Honoring Bailey Nicole Holt
The program bears the name of Bailey Nicole Holt, a 15-year-old Kentucky student who lost her life in a school shooting in 2018. Known for her kindness and compassion, Bailey’s memory drives the initiative’s mission to protect other students from similar tragedies.
Her family’s advocacy following the loss helped inspire the creation of this program, ensuring Bailey’s legacy continues through technology that could save lives.
The initiative represents what organizers describe as both a technological advancement and a moral imperative—using available tools to protect students when the capability exists to make a difference.
Schools interested in the program can access Bailey’s Promise through RAD’s website, where they can find additional information about compatibility requirements and the enrollment process.
