Marshals advance to meet Lakers in 4th District title game

Matthew Langhi scored 20 points to lead the Marshals over CFS in Tuesday’s 4th District Tournament semi-final at Calloway County High School.

Marshall County and Christian Fellowship tipped off in the first of two semi-finals on Tuesday in the 4th District Tournament at Calloway County High School.

The Marshals defeated the Eagles 90-56 to advance to the title game against Calloway County and will be looking to win a second straight district championship.

Calloway County beat Murray 88-68 to advance and it will be their first time in the championship game since the 2021-2022 season after the Marshals ended their season in the semi-finals the last two years.

A 10-3 lead to start the game by Marshall County was cut to four on a 3-pointer by Jakin Burnett for CFS. The lead was trimmed to four two more times in the quarter at 13-9 and 20-16 before a 6-0 run by the Marshals pushed it out to 10 and they held the 10-point lead going into the second quarter up 28-18.

Daxton Kite scored for CFS to cut the lead down to eight to open the second quarter but a 10-0 run followed by Marshals to take a 38-20 lead. The Marshals shot well from behind the arc, hitting four 3-pointers in the first quarter and adding five more in the second to help extend their lead out to 54-30 at halftime.

Tommy Robertson led the 3-point attack with three in the half, Kaden Mohler and Kyzer Phillips had two a piece while Matthew Langhi and Neyland Jezik each hit one. Langhi led the Marshals first half scoring with 18 points and Elijah Grigg led the Eagles with 16.

Robertson dropped in two more threes in the third quarter, scoring eight of their 21 points that helped extend the lead to 75-38 and they cruised on to take the win by 34 and punch their ticket to Thursday’s championship.

Samuel Grigg headed into the fourth quarter with 10 points for the Eagles, just four away from scoring his 1,000th career point. The sophomore made sure to reach the milestone in their final game of the season by adding another eight points.

Marshall County had 11 players in the scoring column led by Langhi with 20, Robertson 18, Mohler 13 and Phillips with 12. Elijah Grigg led CFS with 27 points and Samuel Grigg finished with 18.
