ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. – The Lions are champions!
For the second consecutive season, New Covenant Christian Academy’s varsity boys brought home a first-place trophy for the Kentucky Christian Schools Athletic Association Division II championship. The Lions won three games Feb. 21-22 at the Bluegrass Sportsplex in Elizabethtown, Ky., to come home champions and finish a 20-win season.
Sophomore Jon Ray from Hardin was named the state tournament MVP and a member of the All-Region Team. Sophomores Brett Etherton of Murray and Crider Cunningham of Dexter were also named to the All-Tournament Team. The Lions are coached by Joey Adair.
This is the sixth season NCCA has competed in middle and high school basketball for boys and girls but just the second year in the KCSAA. Seniors Jonathan Siress of Benton and Reid Lynch of Murray were on the first teams at NCCA and had great seasons to end their playing careers.
Earlier in the season, NCCA’s JV boys also won their state tournament. The JV Lions won the KCSAA Division II state championship on Jan. 25. This team was coached by Kory Cunningham, who was an assistant coach for the varsity team.
NCCA opened for the 2010-11 school year and offers preschool through high school. In addition to basketball, extracurriculars include archery, cross country, cheerleading, and track. Students are exposed to a God-centered biblically-based education as the foundation of all truth and knowledge. New Covenant is located at 218 College St. in Hardin.
