Dee Hanes, 72, of Gilbertsville, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at Baptist Health Paducah.

Dee was born on April 11, 1952, in Fayette, Alabama, to the late Cliff and Ruth Oswalt. After high school, Dee attended Murray State University, after which she followed her passion for beauty and style, graduating from Ezell’s Cosmetology School. It was here that Dee honed her skills as a beautician, which eventually led her to become the co-owner of the Kurl Shop, where she spent many years bringing joy and confidence to countless individuals throughout her career. In her younger years, she was a member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church and most recently attended Zion’s Cause Baptist Church. Dee was a good Christian woman who led by example and will continue to guide her loved ones.

On February 14, 1981, Dee married the love of her life, Ed Hanes. From that moment on, the two of them were inseparable and undoubtedly each other’s best friend and partner. Dee and Ed shared the same passion for collecting antiques, which eventually led them to build Twin Lakes Antique Mall in Gilbertsville, which they owned and operated alongside each other since 1997. Their partnership in business was a testament to their unwavering companionship in life.

Dee’s interests were as diverse as they were heartfelt. She found joy in cooking, a skill she used to bring people together and create lasting memories. Dee also expressed her creativity through making jewelry, with each piece reflecting her artistic spirit. Above all, she cherished her role as a loving wife, a devoted mother, and a wonderful “E-E” to all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family was the center of her universe, and she showered each member with unconditional love and support.

She is survived by her husband, Ed Hanes; her children, Katie Hanes of Gilberstville, Kentucky, Logan Hanes (Mackenzie) of Frankfort, Kentucky, Amy Davis (Randall) of Oakland, Tennessee, and Pastor Shawn Hanes (Kili) of Kirksey, Kentucky; one brother, Jim Oswalt (Shirley); seven grandchildren, Brady Hanes, Adeline Hanes, Henry Hanes, Jordan Davis, Hannah Newman (Brant), Jack Hanes (Katherine), and Caedmon Hanes; five great-grandchildren, Banks Newman, Buchanan Newman, Henry Hanes, Charlie Hanes, and Mary Katherine Hanes; one additional great-grandchild on the way; and her three beloved dogs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cliff Oswalt and Ruth Oswalt.
