Michael Ray Smalley, 69, a lifelong resident of Paducah, passed away on May 28th at Baptist Health after a sudden heart attack. Born on March 20th, 1955, to Billy Ray and Mary Kennedy Smalley, Michael was a proud alumnus of Paducah Tilghman High School, Class of 1974, where he followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the football team. He continued his education at Paducah Community College.
In 1987, Michael married Janie Birdwell, and they built their life together in Reidland. Before their marriage, Michael worked as an electrician at USEC and at Warren Radio, where he honed his skills in electronics and developed a passion for helping others.
Michael dedicated 34 years to Baptist Hospital as the Director of Lifeline, a role that perfectly suited his expertise in electronics and his warm, engaging personality. His cheerful demeanor put his clients at ease as he professionally installed and adjusted their Lifeline devices. He was known for going above and beyond, often volunteering to help with other devices or issues, ensuring his clients felt safe and cared for. Additionally, he moonlighted at Dillard’s and Elder Beerman as a suit salesman, helping others dress their finest. After retiring from Baptist Hospital, Michael found another fitting role at Lowe’s of Paducah, where he was able to continue his love of helping others.
Michael enjoyed spending summers on Kentucky Lake, cheering on the Kentucky Wildcats, landscaping his yard, and traveling with Janie. He cherished holidays, especially Christmas, and took pride in beautifully decorating their home. His spirit of volunteerism extended to various community activities, including the Carson Center, Barbecue on the River, Young Historians, Boy Scouts, and most recently, the Paducah Ambassadors. Those who knew him often recall his ever-present smile, earning him the affectionate nickname “Smiley.”
A fitting epitaph for Michael is the familiar quotation from Maya Angelou: “At the end of the day, people won’t remember what you said or did, they will always remember how you made them feel.”
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Janie; his son, Christopher Michael Smalley; his sister, Linda (John) Bogert, and their children, Rachel and Drew; his aunts, Velva Kennedy Yeomans, Faye Fox and Judy Hudgens; his uncle, Elias “Buddy” Kennedy; his stepfather-in-law, Bob Johnston; and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 1st, at Broadway United Methodist Church, 7th & Broadway in Paducah. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the service at 1:00 p.m. The Reverend Larry Buchanan, a lifelong friend of Michael’s, will officiate.
