Independents still fastest-growing bloc
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) – More than 12,000 Kentuckians registered to vote in September, the highest monthly total since 2024, Secretary of State Michael Adams announced Friday.
A total of 12,380 people registered during the month. Voters who are independents or align with third parties again out-registered both Democrats and Republicans.
“Polls across the country show tightening races. In Kentucky, too, voters who do not affiliate with Democrats or Republicans will decide whether Democrats or Republicans win our elections,” Adams said.
Net registration rose by 7,323 in September after 5,057 voters were removed from the rolls. Of those, 3,626 were deceased, 876 were convicted felons, 420 had moved out of state, 61 were duplicate registrations, 39 were adjudged mentally incompetent and 35 voluntarily de-registered.
Republicans make up 48 percent of the electorate, with 1,626,732 registered voters. GOP registration grew by 2,227, or .14 percent.
Democrats account for 41 percent, with 1,373,500 registered voters. Democratic registration rose by 2,486, or .18 percent.
Another 388,992 voters are registered under other political affiliations, mostly independent. That group makes up 11 percent of the electorate. Its registration jumped by 2,610, or .68 percent, the largest percentage gain of the three.
