(MURRAY, Ky.) — Murray State Athletics broke ground Friday on a new press box at Racer Field, home of the Murray State softball program, after securing a $500,000 cash gift from longtime supporter Sandra Hartmann.
The new facility will be known as the Sandra Hartmann Press Box and represents the latest phase in an ongoing renovation of Racer Field, which has also seen the installation of turf in the outfield among other upgrades.
University officials called the groundbreaking a milestone moment for the athletic department. “This is a landmark day for Murray State Athletics and our softball program as we celebrate the groundbreaking of the Sandra Hartmann Press Box at Racer Field,” said Murray State President Dr. Ron Patterson. He added that the structure would stand as a lasting emblem of pride for the program and that he looked forward to watching it take shape in the coming months.
Athletic Director Nico Yantko echoed that sentiment, framing the project as part of a broader push to elevate Murray State’s competitive standing. He said additions like the press box reflect the department’s investment in the future of Racer Softball, noting that the facility would improve the game-day atmosphere, give the program an edge in recruiting, and serve student-athletes for years to come. Yantko expressed gratitude to Hartmann and other donors for helping turn the project from concept to reality, saying the department remains focused on its goal of leading the pack among peer programs.
According to plans, the press box will include a primary media area along with additional auxiliary space, with both located at ground level — a design intended to bring Racer Field up to tournament-hosting standards. Stadium seating will sit atop the structure, giving fans a new elevated perspective on the action below.
The press box is one of several recent investments in the softball program. Others include revenue-sharing funds for athletes, a new indoor hitting facility housed at Roy Stewart Stadium, and renovations to the team’s weight and training rooms.
Head softball coach Kara Amundson said the new press box would have a lasting effect both on current players and on the program’s ability to attract future recruits. She credited Hartmann and other donors for their generosity, saying their support has fueled momentum that is helping build a championship-level program, and said the team is grateful for that continued backing.
Hartmann graduated from Murray State in 1975 with a degree in geography. She went on to a long career in the corporate sector, most recently serving as senior payroll administrator at Colgate-Palmolive Co. before retiring.
Her gift adds to a record-setting fundraising stretch for Murray State Athletics. Over the past two years, the department has raised $44.25 million for new facilities, programs and championship resources — the largest two-year total in school history. That figure includes 16 separate seven-figure donations, also a department record.
The funds are part of Murray State’s broader $100 million fundraising effort, Leading The Pack, which aims to support student-athlete development and wellness, expand revenue-sharing and competitive resources, and fund world-class facilities across the athletic department.
