Michael “Mike” Glen Penney passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on 03 June 2026.
Mike is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Joan Penney; his sons, Michael (Tracy) Penney, Keith (Chelsea) Penney, and David (Anna) Pate; his cherished grandchildren, Courtney (Christopher) Shepard, David Michael Penney, Cameron Penney, Aidan Pate, Connor Pate, Bailey Hodge, and Shane Ballard; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Annie Penney and Cooper Penney. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends.
Mike proudly served his country in the United States Army for more than two decades, retiring in 1994 at the rank of Sergeant Major. His dedication to service did not end with his military retirement. As a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), he continued supporting veterans and their families and later served as Director of National Military Services at the VFW National Headquarters in Kansas City, where he remained a dedicated advocate for those who served.
Throughout his life, Mike was known for his patriotism, leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to helping others. He valued family above all else and took great pride in the accomplishments of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His wisdom, sense of duty, and generous spirit left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Pallbearers are Michael Penney, Keith Penney, David Pate, David Michael Penney, Cameron Penney, Aidan Pate, Connor Pate (honorary), Christopher Shepard (honorary), Cooper Penney (honorary), and Shane Ballard (honorary).
The Fort Campbell and 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) will provide the Honor Guard.
Services were held at The Calling Community Church in Platte City, MO on Sunday 07 June 2026 at 4:00PM.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, 10 June 2026 at Collier Funeral Home, Benton, KY between 10:00-12:30pm with a graveside service to follow at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West, 5817 Ft Campbell Blvd, Hopkinsville, KY on 10 June 2026 at 2:00PM.
