(McCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky.) — A midday traffic stop escalated into a high-speed chase and ended with two arrests, the seizure of more than 170 grams of suspected methamphetamine, a discarded handgun, and suspected hallucinogenic mushrooms, according to the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday when Sgt. Jesse Riddle and Det. David Clark spotted a rental vehicle traveling outbound on Cairo Road and pulled it over for a traffic infraction. The vehicle turned onto Palestine School Road and pulled into a residence, where detectives approached the driver.

The driver refused to identify himself and, when asked to step out of the vehicle, sped off through the yard and back onto the road. Detectives activated their emergency lights and sirens and gave chase.

During the pursuit, the driver briefly stopped and threw a handgun from the vehicle before speeding away again. He ran a stop sign and turned onto Metropolis Lake Road, driving erratically at high speed — behavior authorities say posed a serious risk of injury or death to both passengers and the public.

The chase moved onto TVA property, where the driver crashed through a commercial fence and gate, causing an estimated $1,000 or more in damage. The vehicle became stuck in mud, and the driver fled on foot. He was found attempting to hide near a tanker trailer and was taken into custody without further incident by Sgt. Riddle.

The driver was identified as Austin W. Draffen, 26, of Paducah. Authorities searching the area where he was arrested found a large bag containing approximately 141 grams of suspected methamphetamine. Detectives also recovered the discarded handgun from the roadway. A search of the vehicle turned up a quantity of suspected hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Investigators determined that Draffen is a convicted felon with prior convictions for possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, making his possession of a firearm illegal. He was also driving on a suspended license at the time.

A female passenger, Lorelei A. Rambeau, 28, of Benton, was also taken into custody. A search of her bag yielded approximately 32 grams of suspected methamphetamine and additional illegal contraband.

Draffen faces a lengthy list of charges including first-degree fleeing or evading police by vehicle and on foot, two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, two counts of wanton endangerment of a police officer, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, tampering with physical evidence, first-degree drug trafficking with a firearm enhancement, second-degree drug trafficking of a hallucinogen with a firearm enhancement, two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, and operating on a suspended license, among others.

Rambeau was charged with first-degree drug trafficking, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Both were lodged in the McCracken County Regional Jail. The investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information about illegal activity is asked to contact the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office at 270-444-4719 or submit an anonymous tip to West Kentucky Crime Stoppers at 270-443-TELL.
