(LYON COUNTY, Ky.) — A tense armed standoff lasting nearly two hours ended Tuesday evening when Lyon County Sheriff Brent White arrested two Princeton residents wanted in connection with multiple theft incidents across the region.
The incident began around 4:39 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24, when an off-duty Lyon County deputy spotted a vehicle linked to several recent thefts parked outside the Dollar General store on KY 293, south of Eddyville. Sheriff White responded to the scene and moved to conduct a felony traffic stop as the vehicle attempted to leave the parking lot.
When the driver tried to flee, White maneuvered his cruiser to block the truck’s path. Rather than stop, the driver attempted to ram the sheriff’s cruiser backward into KY 293, an effort that was ultimately unsuccessful.
What followed was a prolonged standoff after the driver refused to comply with law enforcement commands and brandished a handgun in front of a passenger. Officers maintained their positions as negotiations continued for over an hour. Shortly after 6 p.m., a female passenger — identified as Angela F. Egbert, 48, of Princeton — exited the vehicle and was taken into custody. The driver, identified as Thomas J. Prevatte, 46, also of Princeton, surrendered without further incident shortly afterward.
Investigators subsequently determined that the vehicle the pair had been occupying was reported stolen by the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office.
Prevatte now faces 16 charges in total, including first-degree fleeing and evading police, two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, terroristic threatening, and theft by unlawful taking. Kentucky State Police added charges of DUI, operating on a suspended license, and no insurance, among others. Prevatte also had active bench warrants out of McCracken Circuit Court for failure to appear and a probation violation on a prior felony offense.
Egbert was charged in connection with two separate theft incidents, including the alleged theft of an ATV on KY 819 and a separate theft on US 62 East.
Both Prevatte and Egbert were lodged in the Crittenden County Detention Center. Additional charges are pending against both individuals as the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office continue their investigations.
Sheriff White was assisted at the scene by Kentucky State Police, the Eddyville Police Department, Lyon County EMS, and the KYTC Department of Highways.
