(MURRAY, Ky.) — The Murray State News brought home four awards from the Southeast Journalism Conference, held recently in Cartersville, Georgia — a strong showing for the student publication in its first year competing at the event.
The conference draws collegiate journalists from member schools across Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee, representing a mix of large public universities, regional institutions and private colleges.
In the Best of the South Awards, senior Kristopher Fister, a graphic communications media major from Murray, took second place in photography. The Murray State News also earned fifth place in best newspaper and fourth place in best magazine.
Senior MacKenzie Rogers, of Cerulean, Kentucky, claimed second place in the infographic/design on-site competition. Rogers, a journalism and creative writing major, serves as associate editor of The Murray State News.
Both the Best of the South and the on-site competition were firsts for the publication.
“We are thrilled to have performed so well against several larger schools,” said Leigh Landini Wright, adviser to The Murray State News. “The top four in the newspaper division were SEC schools. It shows that our students can rise to the challenge and excel at the highest level of competition.”
The four awards add to an already successful year for the publication, which has now collected 26 awards at the state, regional and national levels since the fall semester began.
