(BENTON, Ky.) — A South Marshall Middle School student is heading to the state Governor’s Cup competition after a strong showing at last weekend’s regional tournament.

Alec Bryant, a seventh grader, earned his spot at the state level by placing in two categories at the Regional Governor’s Cup competition held Saturday at Graves County Middle School. Bryant finished sixth in Social Studies and fifth in Arts and Humanities in the Content Assessment division.

The KAAC Region 1 Academic Competition for West Kentucky drew 16 schools from four districts. Participating schools included Ballard Memorial High School, Paducah Tilghman High School, Marshall County High School, McCracken County High School, Murray High School, and Graves County High School.

Bryant will represent South Marshall Middle School at the state competition on March 20 at The Galt House Hotel in Louisville, where he will compete against the top academic performers from across Kentucky.

The Governor’s Cup is Kentucky’s premier academic competition, testing students’ knowledge across various subject areas and rewarding excellence in scholarship.
