(BENTON, Ky.) – A minor incident during a cooking lesson triggered fire alarms at the Marshall County Exceptional Center Thursday, prompting an emergency response from multiple agencies, though no fire or damage occurred.
Lindsey Walker, Executive Director of the center, shared details of the incident in a Facebook post, explaining that a small mishap during the cooking activity set off the alarm system, creating several tense moments for staff and clients. However, the situation was handled smoothly from start to finish.
“Our clients evacuated the building with the support of our staff beautifully—everyone remained calm, followed procedures, and handled the situation exactly as they should,” Walker wrote. “I could not be more proud of both our staff and our clients.”
The emergency call brought a quick response from several local agencies and officials, including Judge Executive Kevin Spraggs, the Benton Police Department, Benton Fire Department, Benton Gas, and others.
“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Kevin Spraggs, the Benton KY Police Department, Mark Hilton, Benton Gas, Benton Fire Department, Doug Dotson, and everyone else who rushed to check on us,” Walker said in her post. “Your quick response during a frightening moment meant more than I can express.”
Walker emphasized her gratitude for the outcome and the community support. “I thank God for keeping us safe and for the kindness and big hearts shown by everyone involved,” she wrote.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness and the value of a coordinated community response system.
