Red Cross Issues Urgent Call for Blood Donations as Winter Shortage Looms

red-cross-1

(PADUCAH, Ky.) – The American Red Cross is warning of a critical blood shortage this winter that could disrupt lifesaving medical care across the country, prompting officials to issue an urgent appeal for donors.

The organization is encouraging eligible donors to schedule appointments immediately to give blood or platelets as supplies dwindle during the challenging post-holiday period.

To incentivize donations during this critical time, the Red Cross is offering donors who give between Jan. 1-25, 2026, automatic entry into a drawing for a Super Bowl LX giveaway. Complete details about the promotion are available at RedCrossBlood.org/SuperBowl.

The blood drive effort is getting support from a high-profile advocate: Pro Football Champion Saquon Barkley, who is himself a blood donor. Barkley is partnering with the Red Cross to encourage people to make appointments and help address the winter shortage.

Blood shortages during winter months are not uncommon, as holiday travel, seasonal illnesses, and severe weather can all impact donation rates. However, the need for blood products remains constant, with hospitals relying on steady supplies to treat trauma patients, surgical cases, and individuals with chronic conditions.

Those interested in donating can visit RedCrossBlood.org to find nearby donation centers and schedule an appointment.
