(BENTON, Ky.) — The Marshall County Rescue Squad recognized two local men with Life Savers Awards for their critical role in a dramatic flood rescue earlier this year.
Joel Estes and Landon Copeland received the honors for their actions in February, when they helped keep Layne Bullock calm after he was swept away by floodwaters. The two men remained on scene, using their voices to reassure and stabilize Bullock until emergency responders could arrive.
“Their calm voices helped until responders got there,” Curt Curtner said in presenting the awards.
The recognition highlights the importance of bystander assistance during emergency situations. While professional rescue teams provide specialized lifesaving intervention, the actions of ordinary citizens in the critical minutes before help arrives can make the difference between life and
death.
The Marshall County Rescue Squad expressed gratitude to both men for their quick thinking and composure during the emergency.
