Kentucky State Police Warn of Scam Targeting Sex Offenders

(MAYFIELD, Ky.) — Kentucky State Police Post 1 is alerting the public about a recent surge in scam calls, including schemes specifically targeting individuals listed on the Sex Offender Registry.

In multiple incidents reported over the past several days, registered sex offenders have received fraudulent phone calls from someone falsely claiming to be KSP Post 1 Commander Captain Joey Adams. The impersonator tells victims they have an outstanding warrant related to their registry status and demands payment for bond money.

“This is a scam,” KSP officials emphasized in a statement Sunday. “Law enforcement will not call you to advise you of a warrant or request money related to a warrant.”

The scam represents a particularly troubling trend, as it exploits vulnerable populations by using personal information obtained from public registries. KSP Post 1 noted that the department has seen an overall increase in reported scams recently, with several impersonating law enforcement agencies.

Authorities also used the opportunity to remind the public that misusing information from the sex offender registry carries serious legal consequences. Under Kentucky Revised Statutes 525.070 and 525.080, harassing anyone identified on the registry is a criminal offense punishable by up to 90 days in county jail. More severe penalties apply for more serious crimes committed against registered individuals.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call claiming to be from law enforcement should hang up and contact their local police department directly using a verified phone number.
