untitled-17

(BENTON, Ky.) — Herman Ford, who served Marshall County as jailer for nearly three decades and helped establish the Kentucky Jailer’s Association, died Monday at Murray-Calloway County Hospital. He was 88.

Ford, a lifelong Marshall County resident, was elected jailer in 1969 and became known for his dedication to reforming the county’s correctional system. His tenure began in modest circumstances, with Ford and his family living in a small apartment connected to the jail on the courthouse’s top floor. His wife Fannie and their two children occasionally assisted with daily operations, including meal distribution to inmates.

During his time in office, Ford played an instrumental role in founding the Kentucky Jailer’s Association, an organization created to protect and support jailers across the state. He was also pivotal in relocating the Marshall County Jail to a modern facility on West Fifth Street in April 1992.

Colleagues and former inmates alike remembered Ford for his fair and honest approach to corrections. He maintained correspondence with many former inmates over the years and made himself available to offer support when needed.

Ford retired on November 1, 1998, after 29 years of service. His son, Roger Ford, succeeded him as jailer after being elected earlier that year.

Born February 13, 1937, to George R. Ford and Rubie Young Ford, Herman was one of twelve children. He married Fannie Mae Scott on December 29, 1956, after two years of courtship.

A member of Walnut Street Baptist Church, Ford was known in the community for regularly visiting residents at their homes, hospitals, and nursing facilities. In retirement, he remained active on his farm, working with cattle and maintaining equipment.

Ford is survived by his daughter Cindy Wells of Trenton, Tennessee; son Roger Ford of Benton; seven grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Fannie, his parents, four sisters, and seven brothers.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 28, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Life Celebration Center of Filbeck-Cann in Benton. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 29, at 11:00 AM at the same location, with burial to follow at Benton Cemetery.

The family has requested that memorial donations be directed to The Marshall County Exceptional Center or Marcella’s Kitchen, both in Benton.
