(BENTON, Ky.) — Two Marshall County Leadership Class students have delivered custom-designed signs to Central Elementary School, showcasing the practical application of technology skills learned through a community partnership.
Kadence Cavitt and Briley Cathey created the CES-branded signs this semester using advanced equipment at the Marshall County Public Library’s Makerspace as part of the Community Outreach Program.
The students began by recreating the Central Elementary logo in vector format using library-provided software. They then operated a CO₂ laser to cut acrylic into the logo’s shape before using a vinyl cutter to apply multiple colored layers, resulting in vibrant, professional-quality signs.
Central Elementary Principal Jill Darnall received the finished signs on Thursday.
Nick Adams, the library’s Technology and Facilities Coordinator, said watching students develop and apply new skills in the makerspace is particularly rewarding.
Dr. Toddie Adams, Director of Gifted Services, praised the collaboration between the library and the Marshall County GT Program.
“The Marshall County GT Program is so appreciative of the library for providing opportunities for our leadership students to give back to the schools and community,” she said. “While they are mentored through the Community Outreach Program, leadership students must use critical and creative thinking and problem-solving skills to create products using equipment in the makerspace.”
Student feedback about the program has been consistently positive, according to Dr. Adams.
