Kentucky Officials Warn Against Impaired Driving as Halloween Celebrations Begin

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) — Kentucky officials are urging residents to arrange safe transportation if their Halloween plans include alcohol, while also reminding drivers to stay alert for pedestrians during trick-or-treating activities.

Gov. Andy Beshear emphasized the importance of responsible decision-making during Thursday’s announcement. “It’s important that Kentuckians make smart choices to protect themselves and others while on the road,” he said. “Please plan ahead, make sure you have a safe way to get home and do not get behind the wheel after drinking.”

The warning comes as new data from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Office of Highway Safety reveals the scope of impaired driving in the state. Last year, Kentucky recorded 3,486 highway crashes involving impaired drivers, leading to 1,683 injuries and 113 deaths. During the week surrounding Halloween 2024, 84 alcohol-related collisions resulted in two fatalities and 43 injuries.

State transportation officials have partnered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on the safety campaign. NHTSA statistics show that roughly one-third of all traffic fatalities nationwide involve drunk drivers.

“You may think you’re okay to drive or even walk, but even one drink can impair your judgment and slow your reaction time,” said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray. “With trick-or-treating activities planned in many communities, it’s critical to watch your surroundings to keep everyone safe.”

Officials recommend designating a sober driver, using public transportation or ride-sharing services, and wearing seat belts. They also warn that walking while intoxicated poses significant dangers.

Residents who spot suspected impaired drivers can contact Kentucky State Police at 1-800-222-5555 or through the agency’s mobile app. Callers remain anonymous.
