(DRAFFENVILLE, Ky.) — Marshall County High School has announced Evan Merrick as its next principal, effective January 1, 2026. Merrick, currently serving as assistant principal at the school, will succeed Shannon Solomon, who is retiring in December.
The appointment marks a new chapter for Merrick, a 20-year veteran of the Marshall County School System. He began his career in 2006 as a social studies teacher at Marshall County High School, a position he held for 14 years. During that time, he also served as head football coach from 2014 to 2019.
Merrick transitioned to a school counselor role at Marshall County High School in 2020, working in that capacity for two years before accepting an assistant principal position at South Marshall Middle School for the 2022-2023 school year. He returned to Marshall County High School as assistant principal in 2023.
He holds certifications in secondary education with a focus on social sciences, instructional leadership for school principals, and school counseling.
Marshall County School Superintendent Bill Thorpe praised the selection, saying Merrick brings extensive experience and a clear vision for the school’s future.
“Evan brings a wealth of experience and a strong vision for our students and staff,” Thorpe said. “I am confident that his leadership will inspire growth and excellence within our school community. Together, we will continue to create an environment where every student can thrive.”
Merrick expressed enthusiasm about the appointment and his commitment to the school community.
“I am so grateful for this opportunity and excited to serve the wonderful staff and students of Marshall County High School,” he said.
Merrick and his wife, Liz, have been married for 20 years and have four children: Kylie, Kaden, Kenton, and Kinsey.
