(DRAFFENVILLE, Ky.) — The Marshall County Marshals advanced to the KHSAA Boys Soccer First Region Championship with a thrilling 2-1 penalty kick victory over undefeated district rival Murray High on Tuesday evening at the Colburn Soccer Complex.

After a scoreless first half, the Marshals broke through early in the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Murray High responded with an equalizer to force extra time, where neither team could find the decisive golden goal. With the match deadlocked at 1-1, the contest went to penalty kicks, where Marshall County prevailed 4-3 with goalkeeper Carson Lovett making crucial saves.

“We just had the mindset that the pressure was on them,” said Marshals Head Coach Bryan Smothers. “We played as if we had nothing to lose. I couldn’t be prouder of the way they came out tonight against an incredible opponent.”

The victory ended Murray’s remarkable season at 20-1-1, while Marshall County (13-10-1) advances to face the Region One Championship on Thursday night at 6 p.m. in Draffenville.

Marshall County vs. McCracken County will begin at 5:30 with the Hendrickson Wealth and Retirement Prematch Show Thursday on K-95.7 FM WCCK.
