(EDDYVILLE, Ky.) — The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to numerous incidents over the past week, ranging from traffic collisions to a serious threat against Lyon County High School that resulted in a full lockdown and evacuation.

School Threat Prompts Multi-Agency Response

The most significant incident occurred Friday, September 26, when authorities received a call at 12:16 p.m. making specific threats against Lyon County High School. All schools in the district were immediately placed on lockdown as law enforcement and first responders from multiple agencies deployed to the scene.

Students and staff were initially kept in place while officers conducted methodical searches of every area of each school. When an explosive detection canine from the Kentucky State Police was brought in to assist, all students and staff were evacuated to a secure off-campus location where they were reunited with their families.

The searches concluded around 4 p.m. with no threats discovered. By 5 p.m., all students had been safely reunited with their families. As of this date, the caller’s identity remains unknown, though authorities believe this may be a “swatting” incident similar to others occurring nationwide.

“As a parent, I realize it can be frustrating not knowing what is happening or waiting in a long line to be reunited with your child, but please consider this,” Sheriff Brent White said in a statement. “There are many people across this country and some right down the road from us who would gladly trade places with you tonight because you will have your child under your roof safe and sound.”

The Kentucky State Police has assumed the lead role in the ongoing investigation.

Child Exploitation Arrest

In another serious case, Chief Deputy Sam Adams arrested David E. Peek, 48, of Eddyville on Thursday, September 25, following an investigation that began September 20. Peek is accused of soliciting obscene pictures from a 12-year-old child and was charged with Procurement or Promoting Use of Minor by Electronic Means. The investigation continues, and additional charges may be filed.

EPO Violations Lead to Multiple Arrests

On Sunday, September 21, Deputy Bobby Beeler and Sheriff White investigated an emergency protective order violation that resulted in two arrests. Rebecca D. Smith, 34, of Eddyville was charged with Facilitation to Commit a Violation of a Kentucky EPO/DVO. Austin L. Wilson, 38, also of Eddyville, was located in Marshall County and charged with 18 counts of Violation of a Kentucky EPO/DVO.

In a separate case, Andrea M. Breedlove, 37, who was initially charged on September 20 with EPO violation and criminal trespassing, received an additional charge of second-degree burglary on September 22 after investigators confirmed she had unlawfully entered a victim’s home and remained in the basement for a considerable time.

Traffic Incidents

The week saw multiple traffic collisions across the county. On Tuesday, September 23, Christopher L. Miller, 17, of Princeton lost control of his pickup truck on KY 373 after dropping a wheel off the shoulder, crossed the centerline, and collided with a vehicle driven by Jed R. Walker, 64, of Eddyville. No injuries were reported.

That same morning, Sharon M. Bourdon, 54, of Eddyville struck a deer on KY 93 South, sustaining minor damage but no injuries.

Also on September 23, Brenda J. White, 71, of Eddyville hit a large metal equipment cleat abandoned in the roadway on US 641 North, rendering her vehicle inoperable. Authorities are seeking information about the owner of the metal object.

On Saturday, September 27, a golf cart accident on Lake Barkley Drive in Kuttawa left three people injured when a passenger stood up on a moving cart, causing it to overturn down an embankment. Two patients were transported to an area hospital by Lyon County EMS.

DUI and Other Arrests

Late Saturday night, Sheriff White observed a vehicle driving erratically on KY 295 South. After a traffic stop and roadside investigation, Deputy Beeler arrested Nathan T. Hall, 40, of Wingo, charging him with first-offense DUI, failure to maintain insurance, failure to notify DOT of address change, possession of an open alcoholic beverage container, and failure to wear a seat belt.

On Friday night, September 26, Steven A. Hall Jr., 37, of Eddyville was arrested on Indian Hills Trail after deputies found him passed out in the center of the roadway with an open bottle of whiskey beside him. He was charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place.

Additional arrests during the week included Bryan J. Dennis, 37, of Ballwin, Missouri, who was served with a bench warrant for failure to appear in court related to a drug trafficking case after being extradited back to Kentucky.

All arrested individuals were lodged in the Crittenden County Detention Center, except for David A. Strong, 35, of Beattyville, who was served with a Lee Circuit Court indictment warrant for attempting to escape from penitentiary and remains in state custody in Lyon County.
