(MURRAY, Ky.) — Murray High School’s award-winning band program is undergoing a leadership transition following the unexpected resignation of Band Director Tim Zeiss, according to a Wednesday announcement from school officials.
Principal Tony Jarvis informed band families of the change through an email communication, expressing that while Zeiss’s departure may come as surprising news to the school community, students will continue to receive full support during the transition period.
“Your students are deeply cared for and supported here at Murray High School,” Jarvis stated in his message to families, emphasizing that counseling services and additional staff support would be available as needed.
Hunter Carter has been appointed to serve as interim band director while the school moves forward with regular programming and activities.
Legacy of Excellence
During Zeiss’s leadership tenure, which began in 2010, the Murray High School Tiger Band achieved remarkable success on both state and national levels. The program secured five Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) State Marching Band Championships since 2017, including victories in both Class A (2017, 2018) and Class AAA divisions (2021, 2023, 2024) following classification system updates.
The band’s accomplishments extended beyond state boundaries, earning national recognition through the Bands of America competition circuit. Most recently, in November 2024, the group claimed the Class A National Champions title at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, marking their second such victory in four years. The performance earned them top honors in multiple categories, including Best Overall Music, Visual Performance, and Effect.
Individual Recognition
Zeiss’s contributions to music education were acknowledged through numerous professional honors. The Kentucky Music Educators Association named him High School Teacher of the Year in 2023, building on previous recognition as First District High School Teacher of the Year in both 2020 and 2022.
Additional accolades included the Phi Beta Mu Young Band Director Award (2016), McDonald’s “Teach It Forward” Outstanding Educator designation (2020), and selection for Murray State University Alumni Association’s Top 22 Under Forty Class of 2022.
Moving Forward
Principal Jarvis emphasized the program’s continued strength in his communication to families, highlighting students’ dedication and the community’s ongoing support for the band program.
“What has always stood out is their love for what they do and the way they represent this school with dedication and spirit,” Jarvis noted, expressing confidence in the program’s future under interim leadership.
The school administration has not announced a timeline for selecting a permanent replacement for the director position.
