(MURRAY, Ky.) – A former Murray High School educator has been taken into custody by Kentucky State Police on charges stemming from alleged inappropriate sexual contact with a minor student.
Jason Shelby faces charges of third-degree rape and first-degree sexual abuse following his arrest on September 10, 2025. The 47-year-old former teacher is currently being held at the Calloway County Jail.
Timeline of Investigation
The case traces back to August 2018, when the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board first alerted KSP Post 1 about potential misconduct. According to investigators, allegations against Shelby date as far back as 2005, involving at least two students. Shelby resigned from his teaching position in October 2018, shortly after the initial report was filed.
While detectives launched an investigation in 2018, they lacked sufficient evidence to pursue charges until recently. The breakthrough came in August 2025 when a former student came forward with detailed allegations.
Victim’s Account
The complainant, now an adult, reported having a sexual relationship with Shelby during the 2008-2009 school year when she was 15 and 16 years old. Her testimony provided investigators with the evidence needed to secure an arrest warrant, which was issued on September 9, 2025.
Ongoing Investigation
Detective William Propes continues to lead the investigation for Kentucky State Police Post 1. Authorities believe there may be additional victims and are encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
