(DRAFFENVILLE, Ky.)-Following the receipt of updated assessment figures and revised tax rates from the Kentucky Department of Education, Marshall County’s Board of Education has approved a property tax rate of 44.9 cents per $100 of assessed value—a modest 0.1-cent increase from the prior year’s rate of 44.8 cents.
The board also implemented changes to the tangible personal property tax, raising it by 0.2 cents to 45 cents per $100 of assessed value, up from the previous 44.8 cents.
Superintendent Bill Thorpe clarified that the board’s action represented a correction to their earlier decision rather than a complete reversal of their previous vote.
Despite the slight increase, Marshall County’s current tax rate remains below 2014 levels and ranks as the 16th lowest among Kentucky’s 171 school districts. Thorpe noted, however, that Marshall County generates additional revenue through taxes not commonly used by other districts statewide.
The district collects a 0.5% occupational tax on all income earned by Marshall County residents, regardless of their workplace location. Additionally, the county imposes a 3% utility tax on electricity, gas, and water services for both residential and commercial customers.
These supplementary revenue sources help distinguish Marshall County’s overall tax structure from most other Kentucky school districts.
