Murray State Baseball Stars to Serve as Buddies for Miracle League Fall Season Opener

(BENTON, Ky.) — The Miracle League of Western Kentucky will kick off its fall season with a memorable Opening Day celebration on Saturday, September 6, at the CFSB Field of Dreams in Mike Miller Park. The Murray State University Racer Baseball team will take center stage as volunteer buddies, bringing their recent College World Series experience directly to local athletes with disabilities.

The Racers, under Coach Skirka’s leadership, will pair one-on-one with Miracle League players during the season opener, creating personalized support partnerships that define the league’s approach. Murray State Cheerleaders and the beloved Dunker mascot will amplify the celebration atmosphere throughout the morning.

“Our Buddy System creates lasting bonds between volunteers and athletes, and having a team that just competed on college baseball’s biggest stage choose to invest in our community shows the true character of Racer baseball,” explained Director Britney Moss. “These partnerships will create incredible moments on our Field of Dreams.”

The festivities begin with an Opening Ceremony at 9:00 a.m., followed by three game sessions at 9:30, 10:15, and 11:00 a.m. Families and supporters are welcome to attend and cheer on the athlete-buddy pairs as they take the field together.

Operating on a specialized rubberized turf surface designed for wheelchairs and assistive devices, the Miracle League eliminates traditional barriers that prevent children with mental and physical disabilities from participating in baseball. The adaptive field design reduces injury risk while ensuring full accessibility for players with varying mobility needs.

The Western Kentucky chapter has expanded significantly, now supporting more than 70 athletes representing 14 counties across three states. The organization provides year-round adaptive sports programming designed to accommodate participants of all ability levels.
