Three College of Education & Human Services students helped lead Racers to CWS

(MURRAY, Ky.) – For the first time in program history, the Murray State University baseball team reached the College World Series during the 2024-2025 season, with three students from the College of Education and Human Services playing key roles in the historic run.

Junior infielder Luke Mistone, a health and physical education major from Upland, California; graduate pitcher Matthew Parenteau, studying human development and leadership from Carmel, Indiana; and junior catcher Will Vierling, a criminal justice major from Mequon, Wisconsin, all contributed to the Racers’ breakthrough season.

“Our run is every player’s dream, but even more meaningful is the fact that we did this together as a team,” said Vierling. “Coaches, players — we are all so close. I can’t imagine this run with anyone else. This experience will bind us for years to come.”

For Vierling, success on the diamond is matched by his commitment in the classroom. The junior catcher emphasized the importance of balancing Division I athletics with academic pursuits.

“My love for baseball makes the athlete effort a no-brainer,” Vierling explained. “In the classroom, my interest is in criminal justice, and understanding, flexible and excellent professors make all the difference.”

Vierling’s interest in criminal justice began in high school, where he enrolled in several courses in the field. As a student-athlete, he said finding a subject he enjoyed was crucial to academic success.

The stellar season culminated in professional recognition for Vierling, who was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 11th round of the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft.

Reflecting on his time with the Racers, Vierling praised the university’s impact on his development both as an athlete and individual.

“I am grateful to Murray State University, our athletic department, coaches and fans for the opportunity to play for the Racers,” he said.

The historic College World Series appearance marks a new chapter for Murray State baseball and highlights the academic-athletic excellence fostered within the College of Education and Human Services.
