(PADUCAH, Ky.) — Residents across western Kentucky can finally breathe a sigh of relief this weekend as temperatures are expected to drop significantly following a record-breaking heatwave that has gripped the region.

The National Weather Service forecasts highs in the lower to middle 80s for the weekend, with overnight lows dipping into the upper 50s to middle 60s. The cooler temperatures represent a dramatic shift from recent conditions, running 5 to 10 degrees below normal for this time of year.

“After what we’ve been through with this heatwave, this weekend is going to feel absolutely wonderful,” said Allan Diegan, Senior Forecaster at NWS Paducah, noting the stark contrast from the record-setting temperatures that have dominated recent weather patterns.

The forecast calls for predominantly dry conditions across the area, though residents in the Pennyrile region of western Kentucky should keep an eye on the sky Sunday afternoon. Scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop in that area, but the rest of the region is expected to remain precipitation-free.

The cooler, more comfortable conditions are expected to provide a much-needed respite for residents who have endured sweltering temperatures in recent days. The timing couldn’t be better for those planning outdoor activities or simply looking to enjoy some fresh air after being confined indoors by the oppressive heat.

Local authorities remind residents to continue staying hydrated and taking precautions when spending extended time outdoors, even with the milder temperatures expected.
