Marshall County Sheriff Fires School Resource Officer After Investigation

(MARSHALL COUNTY, Ky.) — Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hilbrecht announced the termination of a school resource officer following a multi-agency investigation that resulted in criminal charges.

The investigation began May 12 when the sheriff’s office received an unverified report about the officer’s conduct. No formal complaints had been filed by students, parents, or school staff, but Hilbrecht immediately placed the 20-year veteran on paid administrative leave the following day.

Within 48 hours, emerging information prompted Hilbrecht to contact the Kentucky State Police to conduct an independent criminal investigation. The officer was terminated May 21 after internal investigators found evidence of inappropriate communication.

“I hold every member of this office to a high standard of conduct, especially those working closely with our children,” Hilbrecht said in a statement.

The Kentucky State Police investigation culminated in a grand jury indictment on harassment charges. However, Hilbrecht addressed social media rumors suggesting more serious offenses, stating that neither investigation uncovered inappropriate photos or evidence of additional crimes.

“If anyone believes they have credible evidence that was not turned over, I strongly encourage them to contact the Kentucky State Police directly,” he said.

Hilbrecht acknowledged the delayed public communication, citing state law KRS 15.520, which restricts public comment during law enforcement officers’ due process proceedings. The sheriff, who spent 17 years investigating child abuse cases, emphasized that the legal restriction did not indicate inaction.

“I take the safety of our children personally, and I acted as soon as I had enough evidence to do so,” Hilbrecht said. “We acted swiftly, we followed the law, and we made the right decision.”

The department continues to prioritize community trust and child safety as the case proceeds through the legal system.
