Kyzer Phillips signed on Friday at Marshall County High School to continue his basketball career with Crowley’s Ridge College in Paragould, Arkansas.
Kyzer has been a four-year player for the Marshall County boys’ basketball program and a three-year varsity contributor.
In the 2022-23 season, Kyzer played his way into minutes on the varsity team. While his role was somewhat limited, he established himself as a sharpshooter and it was clear he would become a key player for the program as an upperclassman. He played in over half the games in the ’22-’23 season and helped the Marshals to a 20-11 overall record and the 4th District runner-up. He led the Marshals in 3-point percentage, shooting 43.8% from behind the arc.
In 2023-24, Kyzer increased his role on the varsity team as he was an integral part of a nine-player rotation. He averaged 5.2 points per game on the season, shot 75% from the free throw line and 42.7% from 3-point range, once again leading the team. Kyzer helped see the Marshals to a 25-8 overall record in a very tough, competitive district and region. Kyzer and the Marshals would become 4th District Champions and 1st Region Champions for the first time since 2012, earning the opportunity to play at Rupp Arena in the Boy’s Sweet Sixteen.
In his senior season this year, Kyzer would solidify a role as a starter for the Marshals and was chosen as a team captain. He averaged 11.3 points per game, four rebounds per game, shot 75.4% from the free throw line and 40.4% from 3-point range to lead the team in 3-pointers made.
This was an historic season for the Marshals – starting the season 23-0 before losing the first game – the best start to a season in program history. The Marshals finished with a 29-3 overall record while winning two Holiday tournaments and finishing runner-up in both the 4th District and 1st Region. Kyzer was named to the All-District and All-Region Tournament Teams.
In addition to his success on the basketball court, Kyzer excelled academically as well. He ranks in the top 20 in his graduating class with a 4.1 GPA while taking seven dual credit courses. He is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Young Americans for Freedom and Marshall Militia.
“Knowing Kyzer and his family well, I know playing basketball for the Marshals was something he always envisioned for himself”, Head Coach Sawyer Donohoo said. “And he earned it! Through self-discipline, hard work and toughness, Kyzer made that vision into reality. He constantly challenged himself to be better, put in countless hours working on his game and showed up for practice every day ready to compete. He has truly left a lasting impact on the Marshall County boys basketball program. We wish him the best of luck as he moves on to Crowley’s Ridge College and look forward to cheering him on next year with the Pioneers!”
