Trey Wall assigned to NCAA Golf Regional

Wall is set to play at Atkins Golf Club in Urbana, Illinois on May 12

Trey Wall, Murray State’s first Missouri Valley Conference individual men’s golf champion gathered with family, friends and teammates Wednesday in the Burton Family Hall of Champions, in the CFSB Center, to find out his assignment to the 2025 NCAA Tournament.

Just before 1 p.m. local time, the news was shared that Wall, a redshirt freshman, is in the NCAA field at Atkins Golf Club in Urbana, Illinois with his first round occurring, Monday, May 12.

“This was super cool, just having everybody here and some faces that I didn’t think were going to be able to attend,” Wall said. “There are a lot of people here that have been with me since day one and it was a surreal moment.

Speaking of his decision to have a redshirt year in 2023-24 out of Marshall County High School in Benton, Ky., Wall said that was best for him and Murray State Head Coach Jacob Miller agreed.

“I don’t believe that I would be here without it,” Wall said. “It was a year in which I learned a lot from Coach Miller and my teammates. I could always hit the ball, but I couldn’t get it in the hole like you have to in order to play at this level and there is a lot of learning on how to play the game. The redshirt year has been valuable to me.”

“He’s said it to be about 25 times since the redshirt, about ‘man, I am glad I had that talk with you!'”, said Miller. “I’ve never had a player tell me that sitting out a year was something they regretted. What they say is ‘I wish I had one more year to play’ and Trey used that year to improve and it has been impressive to watch him develop.”

On April 18, Wall carded a final round 3-under-par 69 to secure a two-shot victory to win the MVC title at Des Moines Country Golf Club in Des Moines, Iowa with a MSU program record total of 206.

Wall was named the MVC Freshman of the Year after a score line of 70-67-69=206, tied for the fifth-lowest 54-hole total in MVC history.

Wall joins other MSU players that won conference individual titles, with all of the previous 11 instances coming in the Ohio Valley Conference. Those include Bill Graham (1962, 1963), Ron Acree (1965), Chris Pigott (1971), Kevin Klier (1977), Chris Carlson (1987), Adam Grogan (1996), Brandon Henson (2001), 2001), Nick Newcomb (2008, 2010), Patrick Newcomb (2013).
