Mr. Hugh Donald “Don” Herndon, 77, of Murray, KY, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, October 7, 2024.
Don was born to the late Bernard and Nell Edwards Herndon on April 30, 1947, in Montgomery, AL. He grew up in Montgomery and spent his summers working his family’s farm in Union, AL. Upon graduation from Robert E. Lee High School, he headed to Auburn University where he received his undergraduate degree in Agriculture Science in 1969. Upon graduation, he served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force, and following his service he returned to Auburn University where he earned his master’s degree in Agronomy and Soils.
Don owned and operated Gould Oil Company in Hazel, KY, until he retired in 2018. Don was an active member and long-time deacon of First Baptist Church of Murray, KY, where he taught Sunday School – usually middle school boys — for over 50 years.
Don was a remarkable husband, loving father (a legendary “Girl Dad”), devoted grandfather, and loyal friend. His patience and precision were evident in every aspect of his life, from his work ethic to the way he led, loved, and supported his family. A man of incredible generosity, Don always put others first. Those who knew him appreciated his sense of humor, enjoyed his delicious homegrown vegetables and beautiful flowers, and understood his love for all things Auburn.
Don was a hard worker, who was devoted to his faith, family, and friends. He had the epitome of a true servant’s heart. His faith in Jesus guided his life, shaping his values. He was a man, who would go above and beyond, always ready to lend a helping hand, offer an encouraging word, or help someone in need. Don always put the needs of others before his own — the first to open a door for someone and the last to get in line, allowing others to be served first. Don will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate to know him. He leaves behind a legacy of love through all the lives that he touched.
Don found joy in working outdoors and in meticulously planning creative ways to surprise others with gifts that met an existing need. He also enjoyed sharing a good story and heartfelt belly laugh with those around him.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Bruce Herndon of Trussville, AL.
Those who will celebrate and treasure the many wonderful memories of Don include his loving wife, Joyce Gould Herndon of Murray; three daughters, Angie Herndon Fisher (Brian) of Avondale Estates, GA, Betsy Herndon Character (Ben) of Eutaw, AL, and Cynthia Garland McCubbin (WD) of Lexington, KY; and 14 grandchildren, Reese, Libby Grace, and Blythe Fisher; Johnathan (Lydia), Oakley, Gwendolyn, Hudson, Thomas Jackson, Nate, Knox, Titus, Annalise, and Caleb Character; and Hayden McCubbin.
A celebration of life will be held at Union Christian Church in Eutaw, AL, with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform, AL, directing. Burial will be at the Union Christian Church Cemetery. Pall bearers will be his grandsons. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Gideons International.
