Marshals drop season opener, host Grayson County Friday

Returning quarterback, junior Neyland Jezik, threw for 194 and two touchdowns in the Marshals season opener against Bethlehem.

Under the direction of new head football coach Nick Bloodworth, the Marshals opened the 2024 season at home last Friday against Bethlehem. The Eagles play in District 2 of Class 1A and last season, advanced to the second round of the Class 1A State Playoffs.

Bethlehem beat the Marshals 37-13 behind 318 yards of total offense. Sophomore quarterback Jack Brady threw for 201 yards including four touchdown receptions. Brady’s leading receiver was senior Nicholas Osborne who pulled in all four TD passes and picked up 160 yards on six receptions.

Marshall County had 276 yards of total offense, 194 of those coming in the air. Junior quarterback Neyland Jezik completed 19 of 29 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Leading receivers were senior Cash Henson who had six receptions for 142 yards and two for touchdowns. Senior Toren Redmon had three receptions for 27 yards, junior Kamren Brown had three catches for 26 yards and junior Ethan Webber three receptions for 22 yards.

Leading rushers for the Marshals were freshman Jake Thomasson who had six carries for 42 yards, junior Kayson Holland with 10 for 24 yards and Jezik with seven carries for 16 yards.

The Marshals two touchdowns came late in the game with an extra point tacked on by senior placekicker Tommy Robertson. Kolt Lindsey, a senior, led the Marshals with nine tackles and senior Dylan Robinson had an interception.

Bethlehem held a 16-0 lead at halftime and led 24-0 in the third quarter before both teams scored 13 points late in the contest in the 37-13 final.

The Marshals will host Grayson County on Friday, the second of four straight home games. Grayson County defeated Edmonson County 35-0 on Friday. The Class 5A Cougars play in the Fourth District. The Marshals handed the Cougars one of their two losses last season in a 26-20 win.
