Mr. Alan Stanley Barber, 83, of Murray, passed away on June 23, 2024 at his home.
He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and graduated with degrees in Mathematics: a BA from American International College in Springfield, Mass. and an MS from the University of Illinois in Champagne-Urbana, Ill.
After teaching Mathematics in Newton High School (in Mass.), he relocated to Poughkeepsie, New York to work as a Software System Engineer for IBM. He then relocated to New York City where he continued to work as a Software System Engineer for several banks, eventually retiring.
Alan had many interests and talents and no matter where he was, he found joy in sharing them. In Worcester, he was a member of the traveling choir for All Saint’s Church performing concerts throughout the East. He was an avid alpine skier, winning many medals in downhill races at various Eastern and Western Ski Resorts.
Since he and Cassie moved to Murray after his building was affected by the 9/11 attacks, they have enjoyed their home overlooking Kentucky Lake and their new community of friends. In Murray, his hobbies expanded to include swimming; yoga and playing pool at the Murray-Calloway Senior Citizens Center; enjoying the quieter activities of chess; puzzles; feeding and watching the birds; and of taking care of the many dogs that visited their home and, often, decided to stay. Given his love of animals, he was active in the Humane Society of Calloway County, participating in their events and, especially enjoyed the Pet Therapy Program, visiting many facilities with their Cocker Spaniels.
After a severe accident which left him paralyzed, he was able to continue some of his previous activities but also, with the help of Shari Sherwood, worked and tried very hard to learn to walk again. Alan will be remembered for his smile which he shared with everyone he met.
He leaves his wife of over 50 years, Cassie Barber; his sister, Beryl Barber; his Niece, Lisa-Anne Uhlfelder and many cousins.
His family welcomes visitors from 4 pm – 6 pm on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at Imes Funeral Home, 311 North 4th Street, Murray.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society of Calloway County, 607 Poplar St, Murray, KY 42071 or to the Anna Mae Owen Hospice, 1959 State St. 94 W; Murray, KY 42071.
