NCCA history projects advance to national contest

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Winner, winner! New Covenant Christian Academy had two winners at the National History Day state competition on Saturday, April 27 at the University of Kentucky.

Eighth-grader George Thomas of Murray won first place with his printing press documentary in the junior individual documentary category. Fellow eighth-graders Caleb Crowell of Symsonia and Shadow Smith of Murray won second place in the junior group documentary for their documentary about the Iroquois Theater Fire of 1903. This year’s theme was Turning Points in History.

State winners including these NCCA students will advance to the national competition June 9-13 at the University of Maryland in College Park.

This is the sixth year NCCA history teacher Amanda Smith has included NHD projects in her classroom and had students advance from the regional level. NHD is an academic program focused on historical research, interpretation, and creative expression for fourth- through 12th-grade students.

NCCA opened for the 2010-11 school year and offers preschool through high school. Students are exposed to a God-centered biblically-based education as the foundation of all truth and knowledge.
