Lady Marshals advance to 4th District title game

Laken Schroader (10) battles her way to the goal in the Lady Marshals district tournament game against Murray. Schroader finished with nine points in the 47-27 win over the Lady Tigers.

Marshall County’s Lady Marshals will play for their 32nd 4th District title when they face Calloway County in Wednesday’s championship game. The Lady Marshals defeated Murray High 46-27 in Tuesday’s semi-final.

“It was an ugly offensive game”, Head Coach Aaron Beth said. “Our defense was what it needed to be especially in that second quarter then went on a 19-4 run. Our pressure is what I knew would bother them because it bothered them the two times before.”

Out to an early 6-0 lead fueled by four points from Chevelle Henson, the Lady Marshals held a slim 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Laken Schroader and Kenzlee Terry scored the first four points of the second quarter which kicked off the 19-4 run. Skylar Waller scored seven of her nine points in the quarter before resting the remainder of the game after making her return to the floor since the February 9 game against Calloway County.

Skylar Waller was back on the floor for the Lady Marshals after missing a few games resting her knee. Waller finished with nine first half points.

The second quarter surge gave the Lady Marshals a 29-11 lead at halftime.

“I didn’t want her to play a lot but she needed to play some because she really hasn’t played 8-10 minutes since the Calloway game last time”, Beth said of Waller’s return to action. “Our rhythm is just different when she’s not in there.”

The second half played out even offensively with Beth running in his roster off the bench. The Lady Marshals outscored Murray by one in the half to finish off the 46-27 win.

“We’re just going to have to do a much better job of executing because tonight we didn’t”, Beth said of Wednesday’s title game against Calloway County. “We have to adjust to some of the things they adjusted, from the first game to the second game.”
