Vernon Cecil Bottoms, affectionately known as Cecil to his friends and family, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 31, 2024, in his hometown of Paducah, Kentucky. Born on August 13, 1956, to the late Clarence Edward and Dorothy Bottoms, Cecil’s life was a testament to his creative spirit, adventurous heart, and the joy he found in simple pleasures.
Cecil attended Paducah Tilghman High School. His career spanned over 25 years at Thomas Environmental, where he retired and left behind a legacy of dedication and hard work. His colleagues knew him as a spirited individual who brought a sense of camaraderie and innovation to the workplace. Cecil’s love for the outdoors was evident in his favorite pastimes, which included fishing,
camping, and playing billiards. He had a knack for turning an ordinary day into an adventure. Cecil’s creative approach to life was not limited to his hobbies; it was reflected in the way he solved problems, told stories, and engaged with the world around him.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife, Jennifer Bottoms, with whom he shared countless cherished moments. Together, they raised a family that includes their children Tammy Curletto of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jeff Bottoms, Tiffany Prieto, and Chasity Kubitschek, all of Paducah. Cecil was a proud grandfather to Veronica Hovis, Jeremy Grace, Selena Prieto, Christian Prieto, Lizzy Curletto, and Adrian Prieto. Cecil is also survived by his siblings June Bandy, Charles Michael Bottoms, and Kaylene Cuevas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dinah Irene Oxford, and his brother Danny Bottoms. His family will remember him as the heart of their collective memories. Cecil’s life was one marked by the connections he made and the lives he touched. He was a man who lived with intention and purpose, whether he was at work, with his family, or enjoying the company of friends. His adventurous demeanor and creative outlook will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
As a final testament to his life, those who knew Cecil will recall a man who lived authentically and lived life to the fullest. His spirit and legacy will continue to live on through the stories shared, the laughter remembered, and the memories cherished by his family and friends. Cecil’s journey through life was a beautiful illustration of how to embrace each day with enthusiasm and a sense of discovery. It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to such a hardworking man, but with gratitude for the time we were privileged to share with him.
A private ceremony will be held by the family to honor Cecil’s life. His light and love will forever remain a beacon for those he has left behind. Cecil Bottoms will be remembered not just for the life he lived, but for the love he gave. Rest in peace, dear Cecil. Your spirit will forever roam the woods and waters you so dearly loved.
