Taking the floor following the Lady Marshals win over Calloway County, the Marshals completed the district sweep in their 66-61 win over the Lakers. They improve to 2-1 in the 4th District and 13-4 overall while Calloway County drops to 5-8 and 0-2 in the district.

The Marshals jumped out to an early lead and maintained it the entire game, holding off the expected Calloway County runs that came at them in the fourth quarter. Freshman Matthew Langhi led the charge for the Marshals with 17 points and he was perfect at the free throw hitting 8-of-8.

Both teams shot well from the line. The Marshals were 15-of-18 and rank seventh in the state at 76.4 percent. Calloway County hit 15 of their 17 free throw attempts.

Marshall County opened the game on an 8-1 lead and held an 18-9 lead at the end of the quarter, getting balanced scoring among six different players.

Logan Parker scored the first basket of the second quarter. That was followed by a steal, basket and foul courtesy of Kaden Mohler that gave them their largest lead of the half at 22-9. Calloway County would cut it to 10 on a wide-open slam by Jonah Butler who led the Lakers with 25 points.

Marshall County held a 28-18 lead at halftime.

They expanded their lead in the third quarter behind the scoring of Langhi, Alex Staples, Orrin Phelps and Tommy Robertson and took their largest lead of 18 points (41-26) following a three pointer by Robertson.

Kaden Mohler, guarded by Calloway County’s Kolt Bazzell, gave the Marshals a lift off the bench with four points in the second quarter.

Eli Finley hit the Lakers first three of the game to end the quarter trailing 48-34 and it was the first of five more to come in the fourth quarter from beyond the arc.

Butler dropped in two straight threes to open the fourth and cut the once 18-point Marshals lead down to seven at 48-41. A three by Langhi pushed the lead back to 10 but a four-point play by Conner Lockhart followed after he was fouled on a made three pointer.

Calloway County runs cut the lead down to five points three different times in the quarter and they cut it to four points at 62-58 with under a minute left to play on a three by Kolt Bazzell. In the closing seconds, the Marshals went 4-for-4 at the line and a nice open lay in by Staples pushed the lead to eight.

A three-point foul on Finley, who hit all three free throws, finished out the game and the Marshals five-point win.

A game scheduled for today against West Creek, Tenn. in the Eagles Classic has been canceled. The next game will be at Christian Fellowship on Tuesday.
