Marshals drop district opener to Murray

Matthew Langhi sends the ball back out in the first half against Murray in Tuesday’s game at Taylor Gymnasium. Langhi led the Marshals scoring with 17 points.

Tuesday’s 56-39 loss to Murray was not how the Marshals wanted to kick off their Fourth District schedule and they will have to wait until February for another chance at the Tigers.

Murray jumped out to a 5-0 start and held the lead throughout the four quarters. Freshman Matthew Langhi put the Marshals on the board but they would trail 10-2 until free throws by sophomore Kaden Mohler and Langhi cut the Tigers lead down to four at 10-6 and they trailed 13-8 to end the quarter.

Langhi made it a three-point game to start off the second quarter but a three from Murray’s Drew May pushed the Tigers lead back out to six. Trailing by eight, five straight points from Logan Parker and free throws from Langhi pulled the Marshals to within three at 20-17 and they would cut it to one point at 23-22 on a basket from Mohler.

Kaden Mohler, driving down the court for the Marshals, finished the game with six points.

Orrin Phelps scored to keep the Marshals within two points at 26-24 and a steal by Kyzer Phillips with a chance to tie at the buzzer doesn’t go and they headed to the halftime locker room down by two.

Murray’s 6’7″ senior Zavion Carmon continued his time on the bench with three fouls to start the second half but the Marshals were outscored 15-9 with Murray getting seven points from junior Jeremiah Jones who led the Tigers with 20 in the game.

Murray pushed their lead to 45-33 in the fourth quarter before the Marshals got on the board nearly three minutes in on a free throw by Langhi. Langhi scored four of the Marshals six fourth quarter points while Murray added 15 more to their total to take their largest lead of 17 points in the 56-39 win.

The Marshals were 12-of-14 at the free throw line but made just one basket from 3-point range.

They drop to 4-2 and will host McCracken County at Reed Conder Gymnasium on Friday at 7:30.
