While the Lady Marshals were going for their seventh straight Second District Championship on Thursday, Murray was looking to win their first title since 2016 and came in with some confidence after ending their long drought of 13 straight losses to the Lady Marshals on September 7 by a score of 2-1.
At the end of a scoreless 80 minutes of regulation, the game went into the first five-minute overtime and with 52 seconds remaining, Murray found the net to win the title.
It was a battle from the first whistle to the last on a wet Colburn Field with each team getting off nice looks at goals and both goalkeepers keeping their opponent from scoring.
With two minutes remaining, a final shot by the Lady Marshals hit off the left goalpost and the title game remained scoreless, sending it into overtime.
A second overtime loomed with no goal over the first four minutes, but in the closing seconds a goal by Bria Stiff off an assist from Ava Flota gave the Lady Tigers their first district title in seven years.
Murray will now host next week’s First Region Tournament and will play Paducah Tilghman. Marshall County will play undefeated McCracken County. The Lady Mustangs earned their first win over the Lady Marshals in program history when they won 2-1 on September 28.
