Deputies with the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office and personnel from McCracken County Animal Control responded to a dog in a vehicle on Monday August 21, 2023. At approximately 2:40 PM, Paducah/McCracken County 911 alerted a deputy to a dog that was left unattended in a vehicle at Kentucky Oaks Mall on Hinkleville Road. Witnesses that called 911 stated the vehicle was not running and they had been unable to locate the owner.

Once the first deputy arrived, he attempted to gain access to the vehicle through a window that was partially open. After that attempt was unsuccessful and upon seeing the dog in severe distress, the deputy broke a window to gain access to the dog. Witnesses then took the dog inside a store to start his recovery. The deputy had observed that the dog was barely able to support himself in a seated or standing position, was falling over, panting, and frothing at the mouth. At the time of the call, the air temperature was approximately 92 degrees, but the heat index was quite higher.

Animal Control took the dog to Ceglinski’s Animal Clinic for treatment where he stayed overnight. The dog is recovering well thanks to the quick action by the witnesses.

The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the witnesses who called and gave the dog aid, Animal Control, and Ceglinski’s Animal Clinic.

As the temperatures and the heat index stay high through the week, please remember that children and dogs cannot be left in vehicles that are not running. It takes mere minutes for the heat to be overwhelming.

After locating and speaking with the owners of the dog, they were cited for Cruelty to Animals 2nd Degree. Neveah Sellman, 18 years old, and Theresa Sellman, 64 years old, were both charged and will appear in court in District Court in September, 2023. Both are from Ballard County.
