Lady Marshals finish 1-2 at Owensboro Catholic Classic

Chloe Coursey hit a 3-run triple in the Lady Marshals 8-5 win over Villa Grove, Ill. on Saturday in the Owensboro Catholic Classic.

The Lady Marshals played three games over the weekend in the Owensboro Catholic Classic picking up an 8-5 win over Villa Grove, Ill. on Saturday. They lost two heartbreakers to Breckinridge County 6-5 on Friday and 3-2 to Central Hardin on Saturday.

Entering the final week of the regular season, the Lady Marshals will play at Caldwell County on Thursday then wrap things up with three games over the weekend in the Best of the West in Bowling Green. They will play Murray on May 15 in the 4th District Tournament.

Against Breckinridge County, the Lady Marshals held a 4-2 lead before a 4-run bottom of the fourth inning for the Lady Tigers gave them the 1-run win.

Hits by Chloe Coursey and Chevelle Henson drove in their first two runs in the first inning and two more in the second inning for an early 4-0 lead came in off a single by Anna Vasseur. Breckinridge County cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, runs scoring on a single and an error.

The Lady Tigers went up 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth. The Lady Marshals cut the lead down to one with a run in the fifth inning, leaving the tying run stranded on third.

Merriel Jackson drove in a run in the top of the sixth inning that tied the game at 2-2 against Central Hardin.

The Lady Marshals lost another close one on Saturday when Central Hardin won 3-2 in a walk-off. Trailing 2-1 after five innings, the Lady Marshals tied the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth on a single by Merriel Jackson after Gracelyn Darnall led off with a single.

Central Hardin’s winning run came in the bottom of the inning on a two out full-count single by Jenna Smith. Smith also picked up the win from the circle, striking out two while allowing two runs on four hits.

Allicen Harris earned the 8-5 win over Villa Grove, Ill. on Saturday at the Owensboro Catholic Classic.

After trailing Villa Grove 3-0 through four innings, the Lady Marshals scored six runs in the top of the fifth to lead by three but it would be brief after Villa Grove scored two in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead down to one.

Two triples hit by Merriel Jackson and Chloe Coursey highlighted the 6-run fifth that brought in four of the runs.

A leadoff single by Chevelle Henson followed by a single by Allicen Harris set up their two runs in the top of the sixth for the 8-5 win. A sacrifice by Marin Oakley brought in Henson and Harris scored when Macy McLeod reached on an error.

Harris pitched the first four and two thirds innings to earn the win. The sophomore allowed five runs on seven hits while striking out six.
