Marshals split in Dinger Wood Bat Classic games

In the Marshals two games on Saturday combined, Alex Staples was 5-of-6 at the plate with a triple and RBI.

In Saturday’s Dinger Wood Bat Classic held at Preston Cope Field, the Marshals beat Harding Academy out of Memphis, Tenn. 12-1 in the first game and lost to Lafayette County, Mo. in the second game of the day.

In the 5-inning win over Harding Academy, the Marshals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Chase Shelton led off with a single and Wilson Shadowen was hit by a pitch, which set up the first run crossing the plate on a hit by Gavin Clark. A single by Alex Staples made it a 2-0 game and Clark scored the third run when Chase Hayden grounded out.

The Marshals scored eight runs, all coming on two outs in the third inning to go up 11-0. Clark doubled and Staples hit a single that drove in Clark to get the scoring rolling. The next seven runs came in on singles by Hayden, Driver, Maddox Cope, 3-run double by Shadowen and single from McKinney.

Harding Academy scored one run in the top of the fourth before the Marshals added one more in the bottom of the inning on a Hayden ground out that brought in Staples who reached with a triple.

Freshman Kannon Dunn picked up the win, striking out four and allowing just one hit over the first three innings.

Lafayette County scored six runs to open up in the top of the first inning against Marshall County and no more runs would cross the plate for either team the rest of the game.

Lafayette loaded the bases then brought the six runs in on a walk, three singles and an error. Hanvey, the Lafayette winning pitcher, had seven strike outs and allowed five hits.

The Marshals had five hits led by Chase Shelton and Alex Staples with two each and one by Wilson Shadowen.

Marshall County will host McCracken County today at 5:30, then play two district games this week against Murray.
