District schedule begins this week for the Marshals

Maddox Cope had one of three hits for the Marshals in last week’s loss to Christian County.

The Marshals were 1-2 in their three games last week with the lone win coming over Hopkinsville 3-1. The week began with a 5-0 loss the Christian County and they fell 1-0 to Mt. Vernon, Ill. on Saturday. In the second of two games on Saturday, the Marshals were up 6-0 over Sikeston, Mo. before the game was called due to weather.

In Tuesday’s 5-0 loss to Christian County, the only offense the Marshals could muster was three singles off the bats of Alex Staples, Maddox Cope and Wilson Shadowen. Aiden Lewis pitched the complete game win for the Colonels with 10 strikeouts.

Christian County’s Preston Phan and Carter Scholar hit doubles and Elijah Underhill a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.

The loss went to Reese Oakley who pitched the first three innings, striking out five, allowing two runs on five hits.

Two runs in the first and one more tacked on in the fifth was enough for the Marshals to hold off Hopkinsville for the 3-1 win on seven hits on Thursday. Carter McKinney went the distance on the mound to earn the win, allowing one run, five hits and struck out four.

The bottom of the first inning for the Marshals began on a single by Ethan Landis, walk by Chase Shelton and single by Carter McKinney. A bases loaded walk by Jace Driver brought the first run in and single by Alex Staples drove in the second for a 2-0 lead.

Wilson Shadowen, who reached on a single, was brought across the plate on a hit by Shelton to give the Marshals a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Hopkinsville avoided the shutout with a run in the top of the sixth on a single by Lucas Kaetzel.

Mt. Vernon scored one run in the top of the second on Saturday and it would hold up for the 1-0 win in a great pitching battle. Gavin Clark took the loss for the Marshals over seven innings. The junior had six strikeouts, allowed one run and three hits. Wielt earned the complete game win for Mt. Vernon, allowing three hits, no runs while striking out seven.

Ethan Landis, Chase Shelton and Alex Staples each had a hit for the Marshals.

The Marshals will play their first district game of the season on Tuesday at home against Calloway County (8-8). First pitch at 5:00.
