Marshals finish 3-1 in Panama City Beach Bash games

Chase Shelton had four hits over the Marshals four games in Panama City Beach including two triples and two RBIs.

It was a successful Spring Break trip for the Marshals this week in Panama City Beach, Fla. After an opening game 6-2 loss to Bethlehem Christian Academy, Ga. on Tuesday, the Marshals won the next three 8-4 over Casey County and 12-2 against Christian Educational Consortium on Wednesday. They finished it off with a 10-9 win over Union Grove, Ga. in the final game of the trip on Thursday.

The Marshals improve to 9-5 and will take on Christian County (7-6) on Tuesday in Hopkinsville.

April 4
Bethlehem Christian Academy 6, Marshals 2
Bethlehem Christian Academy scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning and it held until the top of the fifth when the Marshals tied the game. Chase Shelton hit a triple to lead off and he scored from third base on a ball that got passed the catcher.

A Shelton single brought in Alex Staples who blasted a triple to get on base to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth but the scoring opportunities ended on a bases loaded third out. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Bethlehem Christian got to work, scoring three runs to lead 4-2 and with two outs, added two more runs that finished out the 6-2 win.

Carter McKinney struck out five over six innings in the loss, walked four, allowed seven hits and six runs.

April 5
Marshals 8, Casey County 4
Tied 2-2 after four innings, the Marshals took the lead with a 4-run bottom of the fifth and added two more in the sixth for the 8-4 win over Casey County. After loading the bases in the fifth, the four runs scored on sacrifices by Preston Holman and Alex Staples, a single from Jace Driver and a run scoring when Maddox Cope reached on an error.

Casey County cut it to 6-4 with two runs in the top of the sixth but the Marshals put it away with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Holman earned an RBI with the bases loaded and a sacrifice by Carter McKinney brought in the eighth run of the game.

The Marshals utilized four pitchers with Kash Chiles getting the win. The sophomore struck out three, allowed no hits and two runs. Chase Hayden earned the save.

Preston Holman had three hits over four games, a double and finished with five RBIs.

Marshals 12, Christian Educational Consortium 2
In their second game on Wednesday, the Marshals 12 runs came on 12 hits with the win going to Reese Oakley who struck out six, allowing five hits and two runs over five innings.

The 5-0 lead through the first three inning was highlighted by a 2-run single by Preston Holman in the first, an RBI double by Gavin Clark in the second and a 1-run double hit by Carter McKinney in the third. Christian Educational Consortium scored two runs in the top of the fifth but the Marshals put the game away with their 7-run bottom of the inning.

McKinney drew a walk then proceeded to steal second and third base and scored on a hit by Preston Holman. Jace Driver hit a 2-run double to make it an 8-2 game and singles by Clark and Wilson Shadowen brought in two more for a 10-2 lead. A double by McKinney brought in the final two runs of the game.

Marshals 10, Union Grove, GA 9
An 8-8 tie sent this game into extra innings with the Marshals pulling it out with a 2-run top of the ninth. Union Grove scored a run in the bottom of the inning and with two baserunners on and one out, hit into a successful double play for the Marshals for the 1-run win.

The ninth inning runs got started on a walk by Alex Staples who scored on a bunt from Jace Driver who reached on an error and a run came across when Maddox Cope reached base on an error.

The 4-run fifth inning tied the game up at 8-8 and it began on a single from Preston Holman, walk by Reese Oakley and Staples single that loaded up the bases. The four runs came in on a sacrifice from Driver, a wild pitch and singles by Clayton Wyatt and Ethan Landis.
