Marshals notch two wins on Saturday

Reese Oakley beat the throw to first following a bunt in the Marshals 6-5 win over Lyon County.

Rain canceled the Big Orange Classic this past weekend but the Marshals were able to get in two games on Saturday starting with a 4:00 game against Lyon County. The Marshals beat the Lyons 6-5 on seven hits with Carter McKinney earning the complete game win. The senior struck out eight, allowed seven hits and one earned run of the five runs scored.

Ethan Landis led at the plate for the Marshals with a couple of singles and an RBI. Lyon County’s John Bingham hit a 2-run home run in the top of the third inning to lead the Lyons.

Lyon County took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Marshals claimed a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the inning. Ethan Landis led off with a single, Maddox Cope drew a walk and Reece Oakley reached on a bunt to load the bases. The two runs scored on a ground ball out by McKinney and single from Alex Staples.

The Marshals doubled their lead in the bottom of the second, scoring on a hit by Landis and he went on to give them a 4-1 lead beating the throw to home plate.

Bingham’s 2-run homer in the top of the third cut the lead to 4-3 for Lyon County and they tied the game up in the top of the fourth. The Marshals went back up by two in the bottom of the sixth when Chase Shelton scored on a bunt by Landis and Landis scored the sixth run of the game on a bunt from Maddox Cope.

Lyon County threatened in the top of the seventh, cutting the Marshals lead to one when they scored on an error leaving the tying run stranded with the third out.

The Marshals followed the Lyon County win up with a 9-4 win over Caldwell County in the late game on Saturday. Trailing 4-3 after five innings, a big 6-run seventh inning gave them their fourth win on the season on six hits.

Another complete game win went to pitcher Reese Oakley who struck out 13, allowed seven hits and four runs.

Caldwell County took an 1-0 lead in the top of the first but the Marshals 2-run bottom of the inning gave them the lead, getting the runs across on a bunt by Oakley and single from Staples. The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead. Scoring on hits from Luke Parker, Ari Wells and Carter Whittington.

Shelton scored on an Oakley sacrifice fly ball to cut the Lyon County lead to one in the bottom of the fifth. Staples scored to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth and five more runs came in on hits from Cope, Oakley and Preston Holman.
