Marshals looking to get back in the win column at this weekend’s Big Orange Classic

Senior Ethan Landis has recorded hits in all five of the Marshals games so far this season.

After a 2-0 start to the season, the Marshals have dropped their last three including two on Saturday 7-1 to De Smet Jesuit out of St. Louis, Mo. and a close 8-7 loss to Sikeston, Mo. Tuesday they traveled to McCracken County and lost 10-0, still looking for their first win over the Mustangs since May 2018.

In the loss to De Smet Jesuit, the Marshals had three hits coming from Ethan Landis, Preston Holman and a solo home run by Jace Driver in the top of the seventh inning. Carter McKinney took the loss over five and a third innings. McKinney struck out six and allowed six hits.

De Smet Jesuit senior pitcher Jason Smith struck out 10 to earn the win and allowed two hits. They were led at the plate by Frank Marcallini who went 2-for-2 with a double and batted in two runs.

The Marshals held a 7-5 lead over Sikeston after the top of the seventh inning but the Bulldogs pulled out the win with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The winning run came across on a bases loaded 2-out fly ball hit by senior Noah Pruitt.

Maddox Cope and Reese Oakley both went 2-for-4 at the plate with doubles. Carter McKinney also hit a double and was 2-for-3. RBIs were recorded by Alex Staples, Cope, Driver, Wilson Shadowen, Clayton Wyatt and McKinney.

The Marshals had four hits in Tuesday’s 10-0 loss to McCracken County. Two off the bat of Cope and one each by Staples and Landis. The Mustangs earned the win on eight hits, led by senior Nate Lang with a single, triple and two RBIs and senior Zach Sims with a couple of hits and batted in two runs.

Junior Ross Aldridge picked up the win over four innings, striking out six while allowing two hits and no runs. Marshall County freshman Luke Turner took the loss, allowing three hits , four runs – three of those earned, over three innings.

This was the season opener for the 8-time reigning Region 1 champion Mustangs.

The Marshals will be in action again in this weekend’s Big Orange Classic with four games scheduled. Friday they will play Fort Zumwalt South, Mo. at 6:00 and Festus, Mo. at 8:00. Saturday begins with a 9:00 a.m. game against Lyon County followed by an 11:00 a.m. game against Webster County.
