Lady Marshals, Marshals drop pair of games at Webster County

Chevelle Henson and Wade Moore led Marshall County in scoring in their double header at Webster County. Henson scored 22 and Moore had 23 in the road loss for both teams.

The Lady Marshals and Marshals left Webster County on Tuesday night with two losses in this final week of the regular season. The Lady Marshals fell 60-55 to the Lady Trojans and the Marshals suffered a 70-63 loss.

The Lady Marshals drop to 14-14 with one game left before next week’s 4th District Tournament on Thursday against Union County at home. This was the Marshals final regular season game and they wrap it up before post-season play with a record of 19-9.

In the girl’s game, the Lady Marshals only lead came with their 1-0 start and after a 3-3 tie, they trailed the remainder of the game. The Webster County lead was 16-9 at the end of the first quarter but the Lady Marshals would cut it down to three points early in the second. The Lady Trojans stretched it back out to 10 points at 24-14 and took a 28-20 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The Lady Marshals were led in the first half by Chevelle Henson with 10 points and Georgia Hall with eight. Brooke Shepperd and Katelyn Yates each had nine points in the half for Webster County.

Webster County’s lead grew to 39-26 following a three-pointer by Karsyn Cates and they took their largest lead at 46-30 on another three, this time by Katelyn Cates. A basket from Peyton Weitlauf beat the third quarter buzzer and the Lady Marshals trailed 48-34.

The Lady Marshals outscored the Lady Trojans by nine in the fourth quarter. A couple of free throws from Mia Teague drew them to within three points at 58-55 but with little time left, a foul sent Shepperd to the line for Webster County and she dropped in the final two points of the game.

Chevelle Henson had 22 points to lead the Lady Marshals while Katelyn Cates equaled that with 22 for Webster County.

Three straight three-pointers opened the game for Webster County’s boys on a 9-0 lead and the Marshals would play catch up the rest of the game after trailing 20-9 at the end of the first quarter.

A trio of three-pointers from Trey Wall in the second quarter helped trim the Trojans lead to four points at 26-23.  They would stay within five points at halftime down 32-27 after trailing by as many as 13 in the first half.

The Marshals cut the lead down to one point twice in the third quarter, both times on baskets by Alex Staples. Down 37-36 and close to turning things around, the Marshals were a victim of a 10-0 run by Webster County. A basket by Tommy Robertson ended the run and Wade Moore finished out the quarter with a basket and free throw to draw them back to within six.

Webster County went on to take their largest lead of 14 points in the fourth quarter. The Marshals cut it down to eight twice, on free throws by Moore and a three-pointer from Logan Davis and drew to within seven points on a basket by Robertson but time ran out on their late-game surge.

Moore led the Marshals with 23 points. Orcutt Malakai led four Webster County players in double figures with 15 points.
