Christian Fellowship tops Murray 40-29 to earn series sweep

Christian Fellowship wrapped up their regular season games against district opponents at home on Friday with a win over Murray.

With Friday’s 40-29 win over Murray, Christian Fellowship earned the #3 seed in the 4th District Tournament and will play Calloway County. The Lady Eagles will be looking to turn around two regular season losses to the Lady Lakers and earn their first-ever trip to the title game and Region 1 Tournament.

“I am really proud of how the girls played tonight against a well-coached Murray team”, Head Coach Trevor Jackson said. “The game was physical and we were able to handle the physicality but continue to stick to our game plan. We had focused on rebounding better and playing both ends of the floor, and I thought that the team did that well tonight.”

CFS jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in Friday’s home game, prompting Murray to call an early timeout. Out of the timeout, Murray outscored the Lady Eagles 8-3 to tie the game up at 10-10 on a steal and lay in by Kaydence Kindle. Gracie Howard, who scored 10 of the 12 CFS first quarter points, finished the quarter off with a field goal and a 12-10 lead.

Renee Shields dropped in a three-pointer to open the second quarter and Lillian Burnett followed suit with one of her own to give the Lady Eagles an 18-12 lead. They went on to extend their it by two points to lead 22-18 at halftime.

CFS outscored Murray 18-11 in the second half led by nine points from Gracie Howard, seven coming at the free throw line. Murray struggled at the line in the second half, hitting just one of their 12 attempts.

Gracie Howard led the Lady Eagles with 21 points. Alyssa Daughrity scored 12 for Murray.

“We have three games left in the regular season and one of our goals was to reach 20 wins”, Jackson said. “That goal is within reach. We now also know we will be playing Calloway County in the district tournament. We played them tough one time and didn’t show up the second. We hope to continue to improve these next three games and be ready to give Calloway County a good game in the district tournament.”

Following a game today in the US Bank Shootout against Community Christian, CFS will play their final two games of the regular season next week starting on Tuesday, Feb. 14 when they host Hickman County and celebrate Senior Night.
