The Marshals won both district games over Calloway County in the 2021 season, but since then the Lakers have won the last four including Friday’s 56-46 win in Murray. The Lakers improve to 17-4 and 3-0 in district games while the Marshals drop to 1-1 in district play and 14-5 overall.
“We weren’t ready to play and that’s concerning”, Head Coach Sawyer Donohoo said to WCBL. “This is two Friday nights in a row against rivals, big games…that we’ve come out flat.”
Calloway County’s hot start put the Marshals on their heels early when the Lakers jumped out to a 15-5 lead. Free throws from Wade Moore and Orrin Phelps cut it to 15-8 before the Lakers ran off the last minute and a half, getting a final tip in at the buzzer from Jonah Butler to end the quarter up 17-8.
A three by Moore to open the second quarter cut the Lakers lead to six but they would trail by as many as 11 in the quarter before trimming it back to four at 24-20. Another basket before the buzzer, this time a three-pointer from Eli Finley, gave the Lakers a 27-20 halftime lead.
A three from Trey Wall and two dropped in by Phelps who led in the third quarter with seven of their 11 points, kept the Marshals within eight points at 39-31 heading into the fourth quarter.
Moore and Chase Binkley came up with steals in the fourth quarter, cutting off the Lakers attempts to drain the clock and they trailed by six following a three-pointer by Moore with 3:52 to go. Calloway continued to spread their offense with up tempo passing to run off the final minutes and they finished out the game hitting 9-of-13 at the line to get the 10-point win.
Moore led the Marshals with 13 points. Eight three-pointers came from Alex Staples with three, two each by Wall and Phelps and Moore with one. Conner Lockhart led the Lakers with 18 points including four of their nine threes in the game.
The Marshals are back in action this evening when they travel to Fulton City.
